POETICS OF SPACE
‚These trees are magnificent, but even more magnificent is the sublime and moving space between them, as though with their growth it too increased.‚ Gaston Bachelard quoting the poet Rainer Maria Rilke.
‘The Poetics of Space’ is a seminal text, published in 1958 by the French philosopher, Gaston Bachelard. It is a journey and lyrical exploration of the intimacy of the home and of interior spaces, of how our perceptions of these spaces shape our thoughts, memories and dreams.
The city of Athens is the vibrant back drop for this workshop, an urban metropolis with a very particular aesthetic of eclectic architecture, from the modernity of brutalism, traditional dwellings, derelict spaces, old hotels and empty industrial buildings, can serve as phenomenological inspirations to represent the poetics of space.
The outcome will be to produce a body of work and make a presentation to a public audience on the final evening.
The Workshop will take place in a studio situated in the Neos Kosmos, district of central Athens.
Students need to provide their own accommodation.
