The Intimate Portrait

The main purpose of the photographic portrait is to see the likeness of the person who is photographed. The compulsion to reveal the character of the sitter, to dig deep beyond the surface has been strong and is the most difficult to achieve. The Intimate Portrait is a Ostkreuzschule Seminar class, taught by Michael Grieve, and was designed for photographers to critically engage and discover the possibilities of photographing portraits to bridge the distance between the photographer and the subject. This exhibition is a collection of individual projects that have explored and discovered the necessary techniques and strategies via experimentation to convey an honest, empathetic and intimate portrait, to not only see the subject but to feel the subject’s presence and measure our distance from ourselves to them.
